Ingredients

4 cups whole milk

4 large eggs

1 cup granulated sugar

1 tablespoon vanilla extract

1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg

1/4 teaspoon salt

Optional: 1/4 cup raisins or currants

Instructions

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs and sugar until well combined and slightly frothy.

Gradually add the milk to the egg mixture while continuing to whisk to ensure it is smooth and homogeneous.

Stir in the vanilla extract, nutmeg, and salt until evenly distributed. If you're adding raisins or currants, fold them in gently.

Pour the custard mixture into a greased or buttered 9-inch pie dish or baking dish.

Place the pie dish in a larger baking pan and fill the outer pan with hot water until it reaches halfway up the sides of the pie dish (this creates a water bath for even cooking).

Bake the custard in the preheated oven for about 50-60 minutes, or until the center is set and a knife inserted comes out clean.

Once done, remove the custard from the oven and the water bath, and allow it to cool to room temperature before refrigerating for at least 2 hours or until chilled.

Serve slices of the custard alone or with whipped cream on top, and sprinkle additional nutmeg if desired.
