Ingredients

For the filling:

6 medium apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), peeled, cored, and sliced

1/2 cup brown sugar

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg

1 tablespoon lemon juice

1 tablespoon all-purpose flour

For the crisp topping:

1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats

1/2 cup all-purpose flour

1/2 cup packed brown sugar

1/2 teaspoon baking powder

1/4 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted

1/2 cup chopped walnuts or pecans (optional)

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

Prepare the Apple Filling: In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, lemon juice, and flour. Toss until the apples are evenly coated. Spread the apple mixture into a greased 9x13-inch baking dish.

Make the Crisp Topping: In a separate bowl, combine the rolled oats, flour, brown sugar, baking powder, salt, and cinnamon. Mix well. Pour in the melted butter and stir until the mixture is crumbly and well-combined. If you’re adding nuts, fold them in now.

Assemble the Crisp: Evenly sprinkle the oat topping over the apple mixture in the baking dish.

Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 35-40 minutes, or until the apples are bubbling and the topping is golden brown.

Cool & Serve: Let the apple crisp cool for about 10 minutes before serving. This dish is absolutely delightful served warm, ideally with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream!
