Ingredients

1 loaf of brioche or challah bread, cut into 1-inch cubes

4 large eggs

2 cups whole milk

1 cup heavy cream

1/2 cup granulated sugar

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg

1/4 teaspoon salt

1 cup walnuts or pistachios, finely chopped

1 cup honey

1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted

1/2 cup phyllo dough, crumbled (about 3 sheets)

Powdered sugar for dusting

Optional: extra honey for drizzling

Instructions

Prepare the Bread: In a large mixing bowl, combine the brioche or challah bread cubes and the chopped nuts. Toss gently to ensure even distribution.

Make the Custard Mixture: In a separate bowl, whisk together the eggs, whole milk, heavy cream, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until well combined.

Combine Ingredients: Pour the egg mixture over the bread and nuts. Gently fold to ensure the bread cubes are fully soaked in the custard. Let it sit for about 15 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Prepare the Baking Dish: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x13 inch baking dish with some melted butter.

Layer the Bake: Spread half of the soaked bread mixture into the greased baking dish. Drizzle half of the honey and sprinkle half of the crumbled phyllo dough on top. Then add the remaining bread mixture and finish with the rest of the honey and phyllo dough.

Bake the Dish: Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake for 30 minutes. After 30 minutes, remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the custard is set.

Serve: Once baked, let it cool for a few minutes. Dust with powdered sugar and serve warm, drizzled with additional honey if desired.

Enjoy! This delicious fusion of baklava and French toast bake is perfect for brunch or a special breakfast treat.
