Ingredients

For the Biscuit Base:

2 cups all-purpose flour

1 tablespoon baking powder

1 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon baking soda

1/4 cup cold butter, diced

3/4 cup buttermilk

For the Sausage Gravy:

1 pound breakfast sausage (mild or spicy, your choice)

1/4 cup all-purpose flour

3 cups milk (whole for creaminess)

1 teaspoon garlic powder

1 teaspoon onion powder

1 teaspoon black pepper (or to taste)

Salt to taste

1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional, for spice)

For the Casserole:

1 1/2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese

2 large eggs (lightly beaten)

1 tablespoon fresh parsley (chopped, for garnish)

Instructions

Preheat the oven:

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a 9x13-inch baking dish.

      Prepare the biscuits:

In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, and baking soda. Cut in the cold butter with a pastry cutter or your fingertips until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Stir in the buttermilk until just combined, being careful not to overmix. Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and gently fold it a few times before rolling it out to about 1/2-inch thick. Cut out biscuits with a round cutter or just cut into squares.

          Cook the sausage:

In a large skillet over medium heat, crumble the sausage and cook until browned and fully cooked, about 5-7 minutes. Drain excess fat, leaving about 2 tablespoons in the skillet. Stir in the flour and cook for 1-2 minutes until lightly golden. Gradually whisk in the milk, ensuring no lumps form. Add garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, and cayenne (if using). Cook until thickened, about 5 minutes, stirring constantly.

              Assemble the casserole:

In the prepared baking dish, arrange the uncooked biscuits in a single layer. Pour the sausage gravy evenly over the biscuits. Whisk together the beaten eggs and pour them over the casserole, then sprinkle with the shredded cheese.

                  Bake:

Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for 20 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes, or until the biscuits are cooked through and golden brown.

                      Garnish:

Once cooked, remove from oven and let cool for a few minutes. Garnish with chopped parsley before serving.

                          Serve:

Slice into squares and serve warm, enjoying the delicious layers of biscuit, sausage, and gravy!
