Ingredients

For the Buttermilk Cake:

2 cups all-purpose flour

1 ½ tsp baking powder

½ tsp baking soda

½ tsp salt

½ cup unsalted butter, softened

1 cup granulated sugar

2 large eggs, at room temperature

1 tsp vanilla extract

1 cup buttermilk, at room temperature

For the Buttercream Frosting:

1 cup unsalted butter, softened

4 cups powdered sugar

2 tbsp heavy cream

1 tsp vanilla extract

A pinch of salt

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans or line them with parchment paper.

Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.

Cream Butter and Sugar: In another bowl, use an electric mixer to cream the softened butter and granulated sugar together until the mixture is light and fluffy, about 3-5 minutes.

Add Eggs and Vanilla: Add the eggs, one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Then, mix in the vanilla extract.

Combine with Dry Ingredients: Gradually stir the dry ingredient mixture into the butter mixture, alternating with the buttermilk. Start and end with the flour mixture. Mix just until combined; do not overmix.

Bake the Cakes: Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Cool the Cakes: Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes. Then turn them out onto wire racks to cool completely.

Prepare the Buttercream Frosting: In a large bowl, use an electric mixer to beat the softened butter until creamy. Gradually add the powdered sugar, mixing on low until incorporated. Add the heavy cream, vanilla extract, and a pinch of salt. Beat on high until the frosting is fluffy and smooth.

Frost the Cake: Once the cakes are completely cooled, place one layer on a serving platter. Spread a generous layer of buttercream on top, then place the second layer on top and frost the top and sides of the cake with the remaining buttercream.

Decorate (Optional): You can add sprinkles, fresh fruit, or edible flowers on top of the frosting for an extra beautiful touch.

Serve and Enjoy: Slice the cake and serve. Enjoy the buttery goodness with family and friends!
