Ingredients

2 cups all-purpose flour

1 cup granulated sugar

1 teaspoon baking powder

1/2 teaspoon baking soda

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/2 teaspoon nutmeg

1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened

2 large eggs

1 cup unsweetened applesauce

1 cup diced apples (preferably Granny Smith or Honeycrisp)

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1/4 cup chopped walnuts or pecans (optional)

1 tablespoon brown sugar (for topping)

Instructions

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9x5 inch loaf pan.

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg until well combined.

In a separate bowl, cream the softened butter and sugar mixture until light and fluffy.

Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Stir in the applesauce and vanilla extract until combined.

Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined. Avoid over-mixing.

Gently fold in the diced apples and nuts (if using).

Pour the batter into the prepared loaf pan, smoothing the top.

In a small bowl, mix the brown sugar with a pinch of cinnamon and sprinkle it over the top of the batter.

Bake in the preheated oven for 55-65 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Once done, let the bread cool in the pan for about 10 minutes before transferring it to a wire rack to cool completely.
