Ingredients

1 lb ground beef (80/20 blend)

1 medium onion, thinly sliced

4 slices of rye bread

4 slices of American cheese (or your preferred cheese)

2 tablespoons butter

1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

Salt and pepper, to taste

Optional: Pickles or mustard for serving

Instructions

Caramelize the Onions: In a skillet over medium heat, melt 1 tablespoon of butter. Add the sliced onions and a pinch of salt. Cook for about 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the onions are soft and golden brown. Remove from skillet and set aside.

Prepare the Patties: In a mixing bowl, combine the ground beef with Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Form the mixture into two equal-sized patties, about 1/2 inch thick.

Cook the Patties: In the same skillet used for the onions, increase the heat to medium-high. Add the beef patties and cook for about 4-5 minutes on one side. Flip the patties, add the cooked onions on top, and place a slice of cheese on each patty. Cover the skillet to help melt the cheese for another 4-5 minutes, or until the patties reach your desired doneness.

Assemble the Patty Melts: Spread butter on one side of each slice of rye bread. Place one slice, buttered side down, in a clean skillet over medium heat. Layer on one cheese-covered patty with onions, then top with another slice of bread, buttered side up. Cook until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is melted, about 3-4 minutes per side. Repeat with the other patty.

Serve: Slice the patty melts in half, serve hot with optional pickles or mustard on the side.
