Ingredients

1 lb ground beef (80/20)

1 medium onion, thinly sliced

4 slices of rye bread

4 slices of Swiss cheese

2 tablespoons unsalted butter

1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

Salt and pepper, to taste

Optional: garlic powder and mustard for additional flavor

Instructions

Prepare the Onions: In a medium skillet over medium heat, melt 1 tablespoon of butter. Add the sliced onions and cook until they are softened and caramelized, about 10-15 minutes. Stir occasionally, and season with a pinch of salt and pepper. Set aside.

Shape the Patties: In a mixing bowl, combine the ground beef with Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder (if using), salt, and pepper. Form the mixture into two equally sized patties, slightly wider than the slices of bread since they will shrink while cooking.

Cook the Patties: In the same skillet used for the onions, add the remaining tablespoon of butter. Once melted and bubbling, place the patties in the skillet. Cook for about 4-5 minutes on one side until a crust forms, then flip and cook for another 3-4 minutes or until they reach your desired doneness.

Assemble the Patty Melt: During the last minute of cooking the patties, place a slice of Swiss cheese on each patty and cover the skillet with a lid to help melt the cheese.

Toast the Bread: While the cheese melts, heat another skillet or griddle over medium heat. Butter one side of each slice of rye bread. Place two slices, buttered side down, onto the skillet. On each, layer a patty with melted cheese and a generous portion of caramelized onions. Top with another slice of bread, buttered side up.

Grill the Sandwich: Cook for about 3-4 minutes on one side until golden brown. Carefully flip the sandwiches and cook for an additional 3-4 minutes on the other side until both sides are crispy and browned, and the cheese is gooey and melted.

Serve: Remove the sandwiches from the skillet, slice in half, and serve hot. Enjoy with pickles or your favorite dipping sauce!
