Ingredients

For the Filling:

6 medium apples (Honeycrisp or Granny Smith), peeled, cored, and sliced

2 tablespoons lemon juice

1/2 cup granulated sugar

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg

1 tablespoon all-purpose flour

1/4 teaspoon salt

1/4 cup rolled oats

For the Crumble Topping:

1 cup all-purpose flour

1/2 cup brown sugar, packed

1/2 cup old-fashioned rolled oats

1/2 cup cold unsalted butter, diced

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon salt

1/2 cup chopped pecans or walnuts (optional)

For Serving:

Vanilla ice cream or whipped cream (optional)

Instructions

Prepare the Apple Filling: In a large mixing bowl, combine the sliced apples with lemon juice, granulated sugar, ground cinnamon, nutmeg, flour, salt, and rolled oats. Mix gently until the apples are well-coated. Pour this mixture into a greased 9x13-inch baking dish, spreading it out evenly.

Make the Crumble Topping: In another bowl, whisk together the flour, brown sugar, oats, ground cinnamon, and salt. Add the diced cold butter to the mixture. Using your fingers or a pastry cutter, blend until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. If using, stir in the chopped nuts for added crunch.

Assemble the Crumble: Evenly sprinkle the crumble topping over the apple filling, ensuring it covers the apples completely.

Bake: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Place the baking dish in the oven and bake for 30-35 minutes or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are bubbly.

Cool and Serve: Remove the crumble from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes. Serve warm, topped with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream, if desired.
