Ingredients

2 large apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp work best)

½ cup all-purpose flour

1 tsp cinnamon

½ tsp nutmeg

½ cup granulated sugar (or a sugar substitute for a healthier option)

1 cup panko breadcrumbs (for maximum crispiness)

1 egg, beaten

1 tbsp vanilla extract

Cooking spray (for greasing the air fryer basket)

Optional: caramel sauce for dipping

Instructions

Prepare the Apples: Start by washing and drying the apples thoroughly. Cut them into wedges or sticks, about the size of traditional fries. You can choose to peel them or leave the skin on for added texture.

Set Up Breading Stations: In a shallow bowl, mix the all-purpose flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, and ¼ cup of granulated sugar. In another bowl, beat the egg and add the vanilla extract. In a third bowl, place the panko breadcrumbs mixed with the remaining ¼ cup of sugar.

Coat the Apple Fries: Dip each apple slice first in the flour mixture, ensuring it’s coated well. Shake off any excess flour, then dip it into the egg mixture, followed by the panko breadcrumbs, pressing them gently to ensure they stick well.

Preheat the Air Fryer: Preheat your air fryer to 375°F (190°C) for about 5 minutes.

Arrange and Spray: Lightly spray the air fryer basket with cooking spray. Place the breaded apple fries in a single layer in the basket, making sure not to overcrowd them for even cooking.

Cook: Air fry the apple fries for 10-12 minutes, flipping them halfway through to ensure they cook evenly and get crispy all over. They should be golden brown when done.

Serve: Once cooked, remove the crispy apple fries from the air fryer. Let them cool slightly before transferring them to a serving platter. If desired, serve with caramel sauce for dipping.
