Ingredients

1 cup long-grain white rice

2 tablespoons unsalted butter

1 large onion, thinly sliced

2 cloves garlic, minced

3 cups low-sodium vegetable or chicken broth

1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

1 teaspoon dried thyme

Salt and pepper, to taste

1/2 cup shredded Gruyère cheese (or Swiss cheese)

Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

In a medium saucepan, melt 1 tablespoon of butter over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and sprinkle with a pinch of salt. Sauté for about 10-15 minutes until the onions are caramelized, stirring frequently to prevent burning.

Stir in the minced garlic and cook for an additional 1-2 minutes until fragrant.

Add the rice to the pan with the onions and garlic, stirring to coat the rice with the butter and blending flavors.

Pour in the broth, Worcestershire sauce, and dried thyme. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to low and cover the saucepan. Let it simmer for 15-20 minutes, or until the rice is tender and has absorbed all the liquid.

Once cooked, fluff the rice with a fork. Stir in the remaining tablespoon of butter and season with salt and pepper to taste.

Sprinkle the shredded Gruyère cheese on top of the rice, cover the pan again for a couple of minutes to allow the cheese to melt.

Remove from heat and garnish with fresh parsley before serving.
