Chocolate has held a special place in the culinary world for centuries. Its origins can be traced back to ancient Mesoamerican cultures, where cacao beans were revered and used in sacred rituals. Over time, chocolate has evolved from a bitter drink to the sweet, creamy indulgence we know today. The allure of chocolate lies not only in its rich flavor but also in its ability to evoke feelings of happiness and satisfaction. This makes it a favorite ingredient in desserts, particularly chocolate pie.

Ingredients

1 pre-made 9-inch pie crust (store-bought or homemade)

1 cup granulated sugar

1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder

3 tablespoons all-purpose flour

1/4 teaspoon salt

2 cups whole milk

3 large egg yolks, lightly beaten

2 tablespoons unsalted butter

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Whipped cream, for topping

Chocolate shavings or cocoa powder, for garnish

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

Prepare the Pie Shell: If using a homemade crust, roll it out and fit it into a 9-inch pie dish. Prick the bottom with a fork to prevent bubbling. Pre-bake the crust for about 10 minutes, just until lightly golden. Remove from the oven and set aside to cool.

Mix Dry Ingredients: In a medium bowl, whisk together the granulated sugar, unsweetened cocoa powder, flour, and salt until well blended.

Combine Wet Ingredients: In a medium saucepan, heat the milk over medium heat until it begins to steam (do not boil). Gradually whisk about half of the hot milk into the egg yolks to temper them. Then, whisk the egg mixture back into the remaining milk in the saucepan.

Thicken the Filling: Gradually add the dry ingredients to the saucepan while whisking continuously to avoid lumps. Cook the mixture over medium heat while whisking until it thickens and begins to bubble, about 5-7 minutes. Remove from heat.

Add Flavor: Stir in the butter and vanilla extract until the butter is melted and thoroughly combined.

Fill the Pie Crust: Pour the chocolate filling into the pre-baked pie crust, smoothing the top with a spatula. Let it cool to room temperature, and then refrigerate for at least 2 hours until set.

Serve: Just before serving, top with a generous dollop of whipped cream and sprinkle with chocolate shavings or a dusting of cocoa powder for an extra touch.

Enjoy: Slice the pie and serve chilled, reminiscing about Grandma’s kitchen!
