Ingredients

12 lasagna noodles

1 pound ground beef or Italian sausage

1 onion, finely chopped

2 cloves garlic, minced

24 ounces marinara sauce (homemade or store-bought)

15 ounces ricotta cheese

1 egg

2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese

1 cup grated Parmesan cheese

2 tablespoons fresh basil, chopped (or 1 tablespoon dried)

1 teaspoon oregano

Salt and pepper to taste

Olive oil for cooking

Instructions

Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

Cook Noodles: Cook the lasagna noodles according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.

Prepare Meat Sauce: In a large skillet, heat a tablespoon of olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and garlic, sautéing until softened. Add the ground beef or sausage, breaking it up with a spoon, and cook until browned. Season with salt, pepper, basil, and oregano. Stir in the marinara sauce and let simmer for 10 minutes.

Make Ricotta Mixture: In a medium bowl, combine the ricotta cheese, egg, grated Parmesan cheese, and a pinch of salt and pepper. Mix until well combined.

Assemble Lasagna: In a 9x13 inch baking dish, spread a thin layer of meat sauce on the bottom. Place 3 lasagna noodles on top. Spread half of the ricotta mixture over the noodles, followed by a third of the mozzarella cheese and a layer of meat sauce. Repeat the layers: noodles, ricotta, mozzarella, and meat sauce. Top the final layer of noodles with remaining meat sauce and the rest of the mozzarella cheese.

Bake: Cover the dish with aluminum foil (to prevent sticking, spray the foil with cooking spray). Bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 25 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and golden.

Cool and Serve: Allow the lasagna to cool for about 15 minutes before slicing. Garnish with additional fresh basil if desired before serving.
