Ingredients

3 ½ cups all-purpose flour

1 tsp instant yeast

1 tsp sugar

1 tsp salt

1 cup warm water (around 110°F)

2 tbsp plain yogurt

2 tbsp melted butter (plus extra for brushing)

2 cloves garlic, minced

2 tbsp fresh cilantro, chopped (for garnish)

Optional: 1 tsp nigella seeds or sesame seeds for topping

Instructions

Make the Dough: In a mixing bowl, combine the warm water, sugar, and instant yeast. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until frothy. In a separate large bowl, whisk together the flour and salt. Make a well in the center and add the yeast mixture, yogurt, and melted butter. Mix until a shaggy dough forms.

Knead the Dough: Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic. If the dough is too sticky, sprinkle a little flour as needed.

First Rise: Place the kneaded dough in a greased bowl, cover with plastic wrap or a kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1-2 hours or until doubled in size.

Prepare the Garlic Butter: While the dough is rising, melt 2 tablespoons of butter in a small saucepan over low heat. Add the minced garlic and sauté until fragrant, for about 1-2 minutes. Remove from heat and set aside.

Divide and Shape: Once the dough has risen, punch it down gently and transfer it to a floured surface. Divide the dough into 8 equal pieces. Shape each piece into a ball and then flatten each ball into an oval or round shape about ½ inch thick.

Cook the Naan: Preheat a cast iron skillet or non-stick pan over medium-high heat. Place a naan in the pan and cook for about 2 minutes until bubbles form on the surface. Flip it over and cook for an additional 1-2 minutes until slightly charred and cooked through. Repeat with the remaining pieces.

Brush with Garlic Butter: As each naan is finished cooking, brush one side with the prepared garlic butter and sprinkle with fresh cilantro and nigella or sesame seeds if desired.

Serve Warm: Serve the garlic naan warm, alongside your favorite curry, or enjoy them as they are!
