Ingredients

4 cups all-purpose flour

1 packet (2 1/4 tsp) active dry yeast

1 1/2 cups warm water (110°F)

1 tsp sugar

1 tsp salt

1/4 cup baking soda

1 large egg (for egg wash)

Coarse sea salt (for topping)

Optional toppings: garlic powder, onion flakes, cheddar cheese, or any seasoning of your choice

Instructions

Activate the Yeast: In a large mixing bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Allow it to sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy.

Make the Dough: Add flour and salt to the yeast mixture. Stir until a dough forms. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for about 5-8 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.

Let it Rise: Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until it doubles in size.

Prepare the Baking Solution: Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C). In a large pot, bring 8 cups of water to a boil. Once boiling, carefully add the baking soda (be cautious, as it can bubble up).

Shape the Pretzels: Punch down the risen dough and divide it into 8 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a long rope, about 24 inches. Shape each rope into a 'U', twist the ends together, and then fold them back towards the bottom of the 'U' to form your pretzel shape.

Boil the Pretzels: Carefully place each pretzel into the boiling baking soda solution for about 30 seconds, turning halfway through. Use a slotted spatula to remove them and place on a parchment-lined baking sheet.

Add the Egg Wash: In a small bowl, beat the egg. Brush the egg wash over each pretzel and sprinkle with coarse sea salt or any desired toppings.

Bake: Bake the pretzels in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes, or until they are golden brown.

Cool & Serve: Remove from the oven and let them cool on a wire rack for a few minutes. Serve warm with mustard, cheese dip, or your favorite spread!
