Ingredients

12 ounces spaghetti

1 pound ground beef

1 pound Italian sausage

1 medium onion, chopped

3 cloves garlic, minced

28 ounces crushed tomatoes

15 ounces tomato sauce

2 cups ricotta cheese

2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese

1 cup grated Parmesan cheese

2 teaspoons dried oregano

1 teaspoon dried basil

1 teaspoon sugar

Salt and pepper to taste

Fresh basil for garnish (optional)

Instructions

Cook the Spaghetti: In a large pot, bring salted water to a boil. Add spaghetti and cook according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.

Brown the Meats: In a large skillet over medium heat, add the ground beef and Italian sausage. Cook until browned and cooked through, breaking it up as it cooks. Drain excess fat.

Add Aromatics: Add the chopped onion and minced garlic to the skillet with the meat. Sauté for about 5 minutes until the onion is translucent.

Combine Tomatoes: Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, oregano, basil, sugar, salt, and pepper. Let the sauce simmer for about 15-20 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld and the sauce to thicken.

Prepare Cheese Layer: In a bowl, mix the ricotta cheese with half of the grated Parmesan cheese. Season with salt and pepper.

Layer the Dish: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). In a 9x13 inch baking dish, spread a layer of the meat sauce at the bottom. Next, add half of the cooked spaghetti, then half of the ricotta mixture, followed by another layer of meat sauce. Repeat with the remaining spaghetti and ricotta, finishing with the meat sauce on top.

Add Cheese: Sprinkle the shredded mozzarella and remaining Parmesan cheese evenly over the top of the dish.

Bake: Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and golden.

Garnish: Let it cool for a few minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh basil if desired.
