Ingredients

12 ounces ziti pasta

2 tablespoons olive oil

1 small onion, diced

3 cloves garlic, minced

1 pound ground beef or Italian sausage

1 teaspoon dried oregano

1 teaspoon dried basil

1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)

Salt and pepper to taste

1 jar (24 ounces) marinara sauce

2 cups water

1/2 cup ricotta cheese

2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese

1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese

Fresh basil for garnish (optional)

Instructions

Preheat and Prepare: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Gather all your ingredients for easy access.

Sauté Aromatics: In a large oven-safe skillet or pan, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the diced onion and sauté for about 3 minutes until softened. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for another 30 seconds until fragrant.

Brown the Meat: Add the ground beef or sausage to the skillet. Season with oregano, basil, red pepper flakes (if using), and salt and pepper. Cook until the meat is browned and cooked through, breaking it apart with a spoon (about 5-7 minutes).

Combine Ingredients: Once the meat is cooked, drain any excess fat. Stir in the marinara sauce and water, mixing well. Bring to a simmer.

Add Ziti Pasta: Stir in the dried ziti pasta, ensuring it’s submerged in the sauce. Let it simmer for about 10 minutes on medium-low heat, stirring occasionally until the pasta is al dente.

Add Cheeses: Remove the skillet from heat. Spoon dollops of ricotta cheese over the pasta mixture, then sprinkle with shredded mozzarella and grated Parmesan.

Bake: Transfer the skillet to the preheated oven and bake uncovered for 20-25 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and golden.

Garnish and Serve: Once out of the oven, let it cool for a few minutes. Garnish with fresh basil if desired. Serve hot and enjoy your delicious, comforting baked ziti!
