Ingredients

1 lb ground beef (80/20 blend)

1/2 tsp garlic powder

1/2 tsp onion powder

Salt and pepper, to taste

4 slices of rye bread

4 slices of American cheese

1 medium onion, thinly sliced

2 tbsp butter

1/4 cup mayonnaise

2 tbsp ketchup

1 tbsp Dijon mustard

1 tbsp sweet pickle relish

1 tsp Worcestershire sauce

Instructions

Prepare the Secret Sauce: In a small bowl, combine mayonnaise, ketchup, Dijon mustard, sweet pickle relish, and Worcestershire sauce. Mix well and set aside.

Cook the Onions: In a skillet over medium heat, melt 1 tablespoon of butter. Add the sliced onions and a pinch of salt. Sauté for about 15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until they are caramelized and golden brown. Remove from the skillet and set aside.

Form the Patties: In a mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Form into 2 equal-sized patties.

Cook the Patties: In the same skillet, add a little more butter. Over medium-high heat, cook the patties for about 4-5 minutes on each side or until they reach your desired doneness. During the last minute of cooking, place a slice of cheese on each patty to melt.

Assemble the Patty Melts: Spread a generous amount of the secret sauce on one side of two slices of rye bread. Place one cheese-topped patty on top of each slice. Add the caramelized onions over the patties. Top with the remaining slices of bread, sauce side down.

Grill the Sandwiches: Wipe out the skillet and return it to medium heat. Place the assembled sandwiches in the skillet with a tablespoon of butter on each side. Grill for about 3-4 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and crispy.

Serve: Remove from the skillet and let rest for a minute. Slice in half and serve warm with extra secret sauce for dipping. Enjoy your deliciously unique Patty Melt!
