Ingredients

2 cups all-purpose flour

1 tablespoon baking powder

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/4 teaspoon black pepper

1/4 teaspoon garlic powder

1/2 cup unsalted butter, chilled and cubed

1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese

1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese

1 tablespoon fresh rosemary, chopped (or 1 teaspoon dried)

1 tablespoon fresh chives, chopped

1 tablespoon fresh parsley, chopped

3/4 cup buttermilk

1 large egg, beaten (for egg wash)

Instructions

Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, black pepper, and garlic powder.

Cut in Butter: Add the chilled, cubed butter to the flour mixture. Use a pastry cutter or your fingers to mix until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

Add Cheese and Herbs: Stir in the shredded cheddar and grated Parmesan cheese, followed by the rosemary, chives, and parsley, ensuring the herbs and cheese are evenly distributed.

Add Buttermilk: Pour in the buttermilk, gently mixing the ingredients until just combined. Be careful not to overmix; the dough should be slightly sticky.

Shape the Dough: Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Pat it into a 1-inch thick rectangle. Using a sharp knife or a bench scraper, cut the dough into squares or triangles.

Transfer to Baking Sheet: Place the scones on the prepared baking sheet, leaving some space between each scone. Brush the top of each scone with the beaten egg to give them a lovely golden color.

Bake: Bake for 15-20 minutes, or until the scones are golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Cool and Serve: Allow the scones to cool slightly on a wire rack. Serve warm or at room temperature with butter or a spread of your choice.

Prep Time: 20 minutes | Total Time: 35 minutes | Servings: 8 scones
