To achieve perfectly cooked turkey burgers, the technique of shaping the patties is crucial. Start by dividing your turkey mixture into equal portions, typically about 6 ounces each for standard-sized burgers. Gently roll each portion into a ball, then flatten it into a patty that is about ¾-inch thick.

Ingredients

1 lb ground turkey

1/2 cup smoked cheddar cheese, grated

1/4 cup breadcrumbs

1/4 cup finely chopped red onion

2 cloves garlic, minced

1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce

1 tbsp smoked paprika

1 tsp cumin

1 tsp salt

1/2 tsp black pepper

1 tbsp fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

4 whole wheat burger buns

Lettuce, tomato, and avocado for toppings

Your favorite BBQ sauce (optional)

Instructions

Prepare the Mixture: In a large bowl, combine the ground turkey, smoked cheddar cheese, breadcrumbs, red onion, garlic, Worcestershire sauce, smoked paprika, cumin, salt, and black pepper. Mix gently until just incorporated—be careful not to overmix as this can make the burgers tough.

Shape the Patties: Divide the mixture into four equal portions and shape them into patties, about 3/4 inch thick. Make a small indentation in the center of each patty; this helps them cook evenly and prevents puffing up.

Preheat the Grill: Preheat your grill to medium-high heat. If you’re using a grill pan, heat it over medium heat and lightly grease with cooking oil.

Grill the Patties: Place the turkey burgers on the grill and cook for about 5-6 minutes on one side until you see grill marks. Flip the burgers and cook for another 4-5 minutes, or until the internal temperature reaches 165°F (75°C). If you want to add extra cheese, place a slice of smoked cheddar on top of each patty during the last minute of cooking to allow it to melt.

Toast the Buns: While the burgers are finishing, place the whole wheat buns on the grill for about 1-2 minutes until they are lightly toasted.

Assemble the Burgers: On the bottom half of each toasted bun, place a lettuce leaf, then the grilled turkey patty, followed by tomato slices, avocado, and any other desired toppings. Drizzle with BBQ sauce, if using, before placing the top bun on.

Serve: Garnish with fresh parsley and serve the smoky grilled turkey burgers immediately with a side of sweet potato fries or a fresh salad for a complete meal.
