Ingredients

1 cup pecan halves

1/2 cup unsalted butter (1 stick)

1 cup brown sugar, packed

1 cup granulated sugar

2 large eggs

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/2 cup buttermilk

Instructions

Preheat the oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9-inch round cake pan and sprinkle the bottom and sides with some flour.

Prepare the topping: In a small saucepan over medium heat, melt the 1/2 cup of butter. Stir in the brown sugar until it dissolves and forms a thick syrup. Pour the mixture into the prepared cake pan.

Add pecans: Arrange the pecan halves evenly over the brown sugar mixture in the cake pan. Set aside to cool slightly.

Mix cake batter: In a large mixing bowl, cream together the granulated sugar and eggs until light and fluffy. Beat in the vanilla extract.

Combine dry ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.

Combine wet and dry ingredients: Gradually add the dry ingredients to the egg mixture, alternating with the buttermilk. Mix until just combined; do not overmix.

Pour batter over pecans: Carefully pour and spread the batter over the pecan topping in the cake pan.

Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 35–40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Cool and invert: Allow the cake to cool for about 10-15 minutes in the pan. Then, carefully invert it onto a serving platter, allowing the pecans and brown sugar topping to be on top.

Serve: Slice the cake while it's warm and serve with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or whipped cream, if desired.
