Ingredients

2 cups all-purpose flour

1 ½ cups granulated sugar

½ cup unsalted butter, softened

1 cup whole milk, at room temperature

3 large eggs, at room temperature

2 ½ teaspoons baking powder

1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

½ teaspoon salt

¼ teaspoon baking soda

1 cup powdered sugar (for frosting)

1 stick unsalted butter, softened (for frosting)

2 tablespoons heavy cream (for frosting)

1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract (for frosting)

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.

Mix Dry Ingredients: In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.

Cream Butter and Sugar: In a large mixing bowl, using an electric mixer, beat the softened butter and granulated sugar together on medium speed until light and fluffy, about 3-5 minutes.

Incorporate Eggs and Vanilla: Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Mix in the pure vanilla extract.

Combine Ingredients: Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture, alternating with the milk. Begin and end with the dry ingredients, mixing on low speed until just combined. Be careful not to overmix.

Bake the Cake: Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans. Smooth the tops with a spatula. Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Cool the Cakes: Remove the cakes from the oven and let them cool in the pans for 10 minutes. Then, turn them out onto wire racks to cool completely.

Make the Frosting: In a mixing bowl, beat the softened butter until creamy. Gradually add the powdered sugar, beating until combined. Add the heavy cream and vanilla extract, mixing until the frosting is smooth and fluffy.

Frost the Cake: Once the cakes are completely cooled, place one layer on a cake stand or plate. Spread a generous amount of frosting on top of the first layer. Place the second layer on top and frost the top and sides of the entire cake.

Decorate: Optionally, decorate with sprinkles, fresh fruit, or chocolate shavings to add a personal touch.

Serve: Slice your delicious classic vanilla cake and enjoy!
