Ingredients

1 cup (226g) unsalted butter, melted

1 ½ cups (300g) granulated sugar

2 large eggs

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 cup (130g) all-purpose flour

½ cup (45g) unsweetened cocoa powder

½ teaspoon baking powder

½ teaspoon kosher salt

1 cup (180g) semi-sweet chocolate chips

1 cup (120g) brownie mix (store-bought for ease)

Optional: ½ cup (75g) chopped nuts (walnuts or pecans)

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x13-inch baking pan or line it with parchment paper for easy removal.

Mix the Wet Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the melted butter and granulated sugar until well combined. Add in the eggs one at a time, followed by the vanilla extract. Mix until smooth.

Combine Dry Ingredients: In a separate bowl, sift together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and kosher salt. This helps eliminate any lumps and ensures an even texture.

Incorporate Dry into Wet: Slowly add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing with a spatula until just combined. Be careful not to overmix; it’s okay if a few flour streaks remain.

Add Chocolate Chips and Nuts: Fold in the semi-sweet chocolate chips and if using, the chopped nuts. This will distribute the chocolate throughout the batter, ensuring each bite is gooey and rich.

Layering the Browkies: Pour half of the batter into the prepared baking pan, spreading it evenly. Then, sprinkle the brownie mix over this layer. Pour the remaining brownie batter on top and gently spread it out without completely mixing the layers. This creates that signature browkie effect.

Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for about 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out with a few moist crumbs (not wet batter).

Cool and Serve: Allow the browkies to cool in the pan on a wire rack for at least 20 minutes before cutting into squares. This will help achieve those chewy edges while keeping the center fudgy.
