Ingredients

1 sheet of puff pastry, thawed

2 medium apples, thinly sliced (or your favorite fruit)

1/4 cup unsalted butter

1/3 cup brown sugar

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon nutmeg (optional)

1 tablespoon lemon juice

1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)

Fresh mint leaves (for garnish, optional)

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Set your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Prepare the Fruit: In a mixing bowl, combine the thinly sliced apples, lemon juice, cinnamon, and nutmeg (if using). Toss gently to coat the apples and set aside.

Make the Caramel Base: In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt the unsalted butter. Once melted, add the brown sugar and stir until it becomes a smooth caramel mixture, about 2-3 minutes. Remove from heat.

Create the Tart Base: Pour the caramel mixture evenly onto the prepared baking sheet. Arrange the apple slices in a circular pattern on top of the caramel, slightly overlapping them for a beautiful presentation.

Prepare the Puff Pastry: Roll out the puff pastry on a lightly floured surface. Cut it into a rectangle or circle that will cover the apples. You want it to be slightly larger than the fruit arrangement to allow for tuck-in around the edges.

Assemble the Tarts: Place the puff pastry over the apples and caramel. Tuck in the edges around the fruit. Brush the top of the puff pastry with the beaten egg to give it a nice golden color when baked.

Bake: Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for 20-25 minutes or until the puff pastry is golden brown and crispy.

Cool and Flip: Once baked, let the tart cool for about 5 minutes. Carefully run a knife around the edges to loosen it. Place a serving plate upside down over the tart, and quickly but gently flip the plate and baking sheet together to release the tart.

Serve Warm: If desired, garnish with fresh mint leaves for a touch of color and aroma. Cut into slices and enjoy your delightful Upside Down Puff Pastry Tarts warm!
