Ingredients

For the Custard Cream:

2 cups whole milk

1 cup heavy cream

1/2 cup granulated sugar

4 large egg yolks

1/4 cup cornstarch

1 tablespoon pure vanilla extract

Pinch of salt

For the Base:

1 1/2 cups graham cracker crumbs

1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted

3 tablespoons granulated sugar

For the Topping:

Whipped cream (for serving)

Fresh berries (optional)

Instructions

Prepare the Base:

    - Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

      - In a medium bowl, mix together graham cracker crumbs, melted butter, and sugar until well combined.

        - Press the mixture firmly into the bottom of a 9x9 inch square baking dish to form an even layer.

          - Bake for 8-10 minutes until lightly golden. Remove and let cool.

            Make the Custard:

              - In a medium saucepan, combine the milk, heavy cream, and sugar over medium heat. Stir occasionally until it begins to steam but not boil.

                - In another bowl, whisk together the egg yolks, cornstarch, and a pinch of salt until smooth.

                  - Slowly add the warm milk mixture to the egg yolk mixture, whisking continuously to temper the eggs.

                    - Return the combined mixture to the saucepan and cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until it thickens (about 5-7 minutes). Do not let it boil.

                      - Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract. Transfer the custard to a bowl, cover with plastic wrap directly on the surface to prevent a skin from forming, and allow to cool slightly.

                        Combine:

                          - Once the custard is slightly cooled (but still pourable), pour it over the cooled graham cracker base, spreading it evenly with a spatula.

                            - Refrigerate for at least 4 hours or until fully set.

                              Serve:

                                - After the custard is set, cut the squares into desired portions.

                                  - Serve with a dollop of whipped cream and fresh berries if using.
