1 large egg yolk

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Pinch of salt

For the Vanilla Custard:

2 cups whole milk

½ cup granulated sugar

3 large egg yolks

2 tablespoons cornstarch

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

A pinch of salt

For the Topping:

1 cup heavy whipping cream

¼ cup powdered sugar

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Optional: freshly grated nutmeg or chocolate shavings for garnish

Instructions

Prepare the Base:

    - Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

      - In a mixing bowl, combine the flour, powdered sugar, and a pinch of salt.

        - Add the softened butter, egg yolk, and vanilla extract. Mix until the dough comes together.

          - Press the dough into the bottom of a greased 9x9-inch square baking dish, forming an even layer.

            - Bake for 15-18 minutes or until lightly golden. Remove from the oven and let cool.

              Make the Vanilla Custard:

                - In a medium saucepan, heat the whole milk over medium heat until it begins to steam. Do not boil.

                  - In a bowl, whisk together the granulated sugar, egg yolks, cornstarch, and a pinch of salt until well combined.

                    - Gradually pour the hot milk into the egg mixture while whisking continuously to temper the eggs.

                      - Return the mixture to the saucepan and cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until it thickens and coats the back of a spoon (about 5-7 minutes).

                        - Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract. Allow it to cool slightly.

                          Assemble the Squares:

                            - Pour the custard over the cooled base, smoothing it out evenly.

                              - Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours or until set completely.

                                Prepare the Topping:

                                  - In a mixing bowl, combine the heavy whipping cream, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract. Beat until stiff peaks form.

                                    - Once the custard layer is fully set, spread the whipped cream over the top evenly.

                                      Garnish and Serve:

                                        - Optionally sprinkle with freshly grated nutmeg or chocolate shavings.

                                          - Cut into squares, serve chilled, and enjoy the creamy, vanilla goodness of these delightful vanilla custard cream squares!
